Mentor Biography
John Schmit, Grand Rapids, MI
Associate Professor: Grand Valley State University
Prior to joining Grand Valley State Univserity, John served as Graduate Assistant Instructor at The University of Iowa. Before arriving at The University of Iowa, John served as Assistant Engineer at The Enterprise Recording Studios. John is a documentary filmmaker, focusing primarily on issues related to environmental sustainability. His work ranges from nonfiction to experimental in a pursuit to infuse documentary with formal sophistication. His work has been selected for numerous film festivals, recently earning a Global Vision Award from the World Population Film and Video Festival. His most recent production, "Power From The People" will be broadcast on Free Speech TV in 2002. He teaches courses in video production, documentary and media history/theory, with a special interest in community media.
In his personal time, John enjoys fun stuff outside.
